Thoughts From The Thinking Hill

This Pilgrim's Journey

They Know…They Really Do Know!

In any other year this bluejay sitting on my granddaughter’s shoulder would appear really strange but in the summer of 2020, maybe, just maybe in this bewildering year, not so much.  There it sits, a creature of the wild, sitting calmly with no fear or concern, not a worry in the world and entirely contented. This little bird and I had an interesting conversation one afternoon this midsummer.  Believing that there are “so many kinds of voices in the world and none of them is without signification”,  I have often found myself thinking about this bird and our meeting on that eventful day.  Let me tell you my story.

This summer I raised the middle overhead door to my shop, walked in to repair a project and was followed by this bluejay.  Upon hearing the flutter of its wings close to my head, I turned, just as it landed on my trailer about 5 feet away. There it sat looking straight at me.  My first thought was “Well that’s Weird” but just as quick as this thought flashed through my mind the bird opened its mouth and made a very loud sound that sounded exactly like “HELP”!

Honestly, the bird looking straight at me, saying “HELP” gave me a start but, I said, “You’ll have to go back out, you can’t stay in here”.  With that I walked about 50 feet to one end of my shop to retrieve a tool and the same thing happened again.   I heard the flutter of the bird’s wings and turned to see she had landed on a shelf about 3 feet from my head, and once again, the same thing happened.  As I turned I found her looking me square in the face and again made this loud cry of “HELP”.

I was convinced that this bluejay was trying to get my attention and was asking me for my help.   I thought this is a really, really strange moment.  I then had to walk almost 100 feet to the other end of my shop to get an item.

Now, I know you are running ahead of my story but yes I was followed by the flutter of wings and still once again she landed within arms length, looking straight at me loudly cried “HELP”.  This was the third time she had done this and for the third time I told her that she could not stay in my shop or she would die in there.  As I turned to go back to my original workplace she flew ahead and landed right in front of me, looked me straight in the eye and loudly demanded “HELP”!  A precept from the Bible that I live by is in the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.  Whenever I have circumstances repeated two and three times I am really pulled up short and think about what is going on.  For a brief moment, I stood there looking at this helpless bird thinking about what was happening and the application of this biblical precept.

I reached down and gently picked her up. Upon examining her, I found that she appeared to have a paralyzed left leg and her left wing was not fully functioning.  I knew at best she had a limited hope of surviving very long in the wild, but how would I be able to help this little, crippled, bluejay?

Now, I am not a Bird Whisperer but I do have three grandchildren that would fall into that category.  They love any kind of animal and they have had frogs, turtles, chickens, ducks, cats, rabbits, dogs, tarantulas among other creatures living with them. They have literally turned their back yard into a wildlife hospital and habitat.  I knew if anyone had a heart to help this poor, deformed, bluejay it would be these kids.

I placed the bird in a pet carrier and took it to the grandkids and told them my story. They began to love, feed, and care for it and the next time I saw this strange little bird, there she sat, pretty as you please, perched on my granddaughter’s shoulder like they were old, old friends without a care in the world and certainly not asking for help!  I have often reflected on this little bird and our odd meeting that day.

What makes a living creature with lower intelligence than a human seek out a human for help when her life appeared to be hanging in the balance scale.  How does a bird know that this other life form is greater than she is and could somehow be a means of saving her from her desperate condition, or that he would even bother with her?   Why did she seek out a man instead of another creature such as a dog, cat, or even another bird?

Others may not give it a second thought but I have encountered several of these strange circumstances in my life and I always find myself reflecting and analyzing why these occurred and why particularly with me. Perhaps its just me but I have always found these to be wonderful teaching moments.  I have thought about it often over the last several months and this day was no exception.

Once again this morning I was thinking on this peculiar day. Why would a creature with lesser intelligence and ability think that I as a human with more intelligence and ability could and even would help it?  Why did this one bird, when all the other birds over the years had always flown away from me in haste, why did this one lone bird seek my help?

It came to me clear as a bell! IT KNEW! IT REALLY KNEW that I was somehow a higher creature than itself. Digital data doesn’t travel any faster than the thoughts that raced through my mind. I knew in a moment of time that they all know. There is a hierarchy in all of God’s creation and God created man a little lower than the angels and gave man dominion over every living creature on this earth.

The message to me was very powerful and sobering. They know, they really do know. They all know there is a higher being.  All those professing atheists lined up down through the corridors of time and those on todays platform that loudly proclaim “They don’t believe in a God” and say in their heart “there is no God”.   THEY ALL KNOW, THEY ALL REALLY, REALLY DO KNOW. They know there is a God and He is Holy!  Then the words came like a flood….” Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.  For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:  Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.  Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.  Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.”   ROMANS 1:21-25
