David never campaigned to be King of Israel. Content to shepherd his fathers sheep, this calling was thrust upon him by the author of his Faith. Having led Israel to years of glory now he is facing an attempted coup. A disgruntled opponent was not his challenger but Absalom his own son, who had stolen the hearts of Israel. Family, friends and counsellors joined the group who turned their backs on David.
Troubles never come alone. They always come in companies. David became pressed down by his many troublers. David groaned as he left Jerusalem in the stealth of night “how are they increased that trouble me.” The ringing in his ears was the echoing voices, “EVEN GOD CAN’T HELP HIM”.
Look and Listen as he kneels at night on those dark Judean hills and prays, NOT silently but out loud, “I cried unto the Lord with my voice”. Lift it up, speak it out, let those whom trouble hear the voice calling to the Almighty! He is calling for his Shield and the lifter of his head. If his crown is to survive, it will have to be the Lord that lifts up David’s head! His strong testimony is ours today “He heard me”! Deceivers are liars and the truth is not in them. God does hear the voice of his children and He does come to their aid! “God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early” Psalm 46:5-6.
With trouble behind him, before him, and all around him he was now able to lay down and sleep! The troubles of the day, the terrors of the struggling slumber, and the fears of tomorrow were gone, gone, gone. When he awoke, he declared with the voice of assurance “The Lord sustained me!”
Knowing God had heard him he was confident that upon awaking and even finding ten thousand against him all around, he would not be afraid! God would crush the jaws of the enemy and take away their destroying bite. David’s Psalm was given to assure us to hope in the Lord for our Salvation because our Salvation totally belongs to the Lord!
Perhaps your year has been filled with the terror by night and arrows by day or the pestilence that walketh in darkness. Maybe you have listened to those voices that report the story of today and fear has become a constant companion. For the Believer, this Psalm holds your peace today and your hope for tomorrow. He will crush the bite of the enemy and give you rest and peace. Your troublers may not all vanish…… but you can know in assurance that your Salvation belongs to the LORD! Selah.
1 Lord, how are they increased that trouble me!
many are they that rise up against me.
2 Many there be which say of my soul,
There is no help for him in God. Selah.
3 But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me;
my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.
4 I cried unto the Lord with my voice,
and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah.
5 I laid me down and slept;
I awaked; for the Lord sustained me.
6 I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people,
that have set themselves against me round about.
7 Arise, O Lord; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine
enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly.
8 Salvation belongeth unto the Lord:
thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah.
